When winter falls on a farm, the life changes drastically from spring planting, summer and fall harvests. Winter becomes a time of bringing livestock back to the home corral, bedded straw, and daily feeding. It’s a time when the farmer wears double and triple layers of clothing because the livestock comes before his own breakfast. Winter is also a time to repair machinery including heaters in the barns, tractor repairs and sometimes welding that crack in a plow. Not every year brings profits, but next year might and last year’s profits will get them through. I grew up on that farm and the memories for a child can be magical, even with daily chores. A snowy winter includes sledding, snowball fights, and a snowman or two. Hot cocoa, Christmas is coming and need I list more?
