The Red Tail Hawk is the most populous species of hawk in North America. This is likely the reason why nearly all indigenous tribes consider them sacred. They are thought to carry their prayers. Some tribes will not kill them for their feathers but use only tail feathers as they found the naturally shed feathers.
The feathers were often used in cere monies and head dresses as showed in this picture. The tail feathers were the most sought after.
